Week 4 - Community
Team Spirit

In a time when we often find ourselves divided instead of united,

Be reminded, there is only one force that overcomes fear and hate,

LOVE makes US great!

Welcome to the ninth month of LOVE makes US great! This blog follows a monthly formula. Fourth week – bringing more love to communities. Let’s start loving.

I've been to more baseball games this year than I ever have in one season. Two Martinez Sturgeon games. Two Oakland Ballers (Pioneer League champions!!!) games. Two Tokyo Giants games.

I'm not a big sports fan. I do love the spirit of the teams and the crowd. I love that we can cheer for our own team and do so with deep respect for our opponents. There is a sense of community among the fans. We have many differences, and we share a common love for our team that brings us together.

There is lighthearted ribbing of the opposing team, but usually/hopefully, not anything mean or spiteful. We all appreciate the efforts and athleticism of all the players. We can support our team without putting each other down or disrespecting one another.

For the sake of my own sanity and love for humanity, I believe that this is possible for all of our communities. Not easy, certainly possible. Respecting and valuing differences. Taking time to understand each other instead of dissing and cancelling one another. Respecting free speech and welcoming debate with words. Learning to love, even in response to hate.

Rooting for the home team is love in action. Respecting and valuing the opposition is love in action amplified.

Love requires participation.

Love requires sharing.

Love requires action.

Love requires commitment.

With gratitude,

Joyce Aiko

(Yes, love really is my middle name.)
