Week 3 -  Workplace
Dollars and Sense

In a time when we often find ourselves divided instead of united,

Be reminded, there is only one force that overcomes fear and hate,

LOVE makes US great!

Welcome to the ninth month of LOVE makes US great! This blog follows a monthly formula. Third week – bringing more love to our workplaces. Let’s start loving.

Please forgive me for posting a little late. I’ve just returned from holiday in Japan, and my priority was time with my partner and with myself – family first. And, hey, if South Park can delay an episode's release because it's not ready, I don't feel so bad.

If you know me, you know I am an inclusion zealot. Last week, I was asked about the outlook for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in light of the recent changes in perspective of the current US administration. I paused before answering to reflect on why I, and why companies, started to do this work in the first place.

At the beginning, many talked about doing the “right thing.” Let’s be honest - the “right things” are the first to be cut in times of profit pressures. Unless, they can show they drive revenue or cut costs.

As research continued to reveal the economic benefits of diversity and inclusion time and time again, the work gained momentum because of the positive correlation to problem-solving, decision-making, innovation, talent attraction, and talent retention – all drivers of revenue, cost-savings, and profit.

The work took off because of the positive impact on the pursuit of the almighty Dollar, Yen, Euro, name your currency.

The reality is that actions taken to advance equality today lead to improved business results in the future.

Many of you know I'm also a massive fan of two-fers. I was both a Psychology and Economics major. My studies and experience point to optimization and maximization as drivers of human behavior. When we can use this reality to also do the “right thing,” it is one of the best two-fers I know of.

My answer to the question of the outlook for the future is that many companies are continuing to drive diversity, ensure equality through systemic fairness, and integrate inclusion because they are experiencing, or want to experience, the improved business results.

Some companies are changing the names and improving their programs to continue the work they know makes a difference. Some are standing firm in their commitments. Some are dropping Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs.

I believe that Love and Inclusion will stand the test of time – because they make good business sense.

Maximizing inclusion in the pursuit of profit is love in action. Creating more fairness for everyone is love in action.

Love requires participation.

Love requires sharing.

Love requires action.

Love requires commitment.

With gratitude,

Joyce Aiko

(Yes, love really is my middle name.)
