Week 2 - Family and Friends
Pink Sisters

In a time when we often find ourselves divided instead of united,

Be reminded, there is only one force that overcomes fear and hate,

LOVE makes US great!

Welcome to the tenth month of LOVE makes US great! This blog follows a monthly formula. Second week – bringing more love to family and friends. Let’s start loving.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Officially, I have one sibling—a wonderful, caring brother. I didn't grow up wishing for a sister, yet now I have many—my Pink Sisters.

Last week I shared about first learning I had breast cancer. Mine was caught early, and my care did not require the intensity it does for many. Initially, I believed that, other than a ride home after surgery, I could take care of myself.

Luckily, fate intervened. I saw a calendar for events offered by my local Cancer Support Community (CSC). They provided exercise, nutrition, and educational programs for cancer patients and their families – all for free! When I signed up, planning to simply take a couple of yoga classes, it was suggested that I attend a support group for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. I didn’t think I needed it, but what the heck, check it out.

Our group started with three and soon grew to ten steady participants. A group of total strangers quickly became fast friends. We shared the details of what was happening medically. More importantly, we shared our challenges, our fears, and our hopes. We shared intimate details about life and health post-treatment. We laughed together about knitted knockers and cheap wigs.

We cried together. Our ten became nine. Mary, we love you and miss your mirth and compassion.

We are forever connected. Twice, I have called upon a sister to talk to a new sister with a similar diagnosis. I have always heard back with an emphatic, “Yes, of course,” within minutes.

Family is defined by love and connection.

Knowing family is there for each other when it matters most is love in action.

Love requires participation.

Love requires sharing.

Love requires action.

Love requires commitment.

With gratitude,

Joyce Aiko

(Yes, love really is my middle name.)
