Week 4 - Community
Give and Let Go

In a time when we often find ourselves divided instead of united,

Be reminded, there is only one force that overcomes fear and hate,

LOVE makes US great!

Welcome to the eleventh month of LOVE makes US great! This blog follows a monthly formula. Fourth week – bringing more love to our communities. Let’s start loving.

Many years ago, the city of San Francisco was trying to curb “panhandling” and address homelessness. They asked residents not to give money to individuals who asked for it. Instead, there were little reference sheets you were supposed to get somewhere (seriously?) and give to folks instead. It was the classic: "How do you know what they will do with the money? What if the person buys drugs, not food?" Yes, it is better to steer folks to long-term solutions, but some needs are urgent for that day.

Last weekend, I was approached by a young man in the Trader Joe's parking lot who was fundraising for his sober living house. I'm a fan of sober living communities. For a moment, the thought went through my head, “What if the money gets used for something else? What if they are using this as a ploy to fundraise for a party?”

True, I could have taken a flyer, looked up the organization, checked whether it was legit, and donated online. Reality check: Would I really do that when I got home? No. Did dropping ten bucks in the bucket impact my ability to have a warm meal and warm bed that night – no. Might it help someone else to sleep safely – perhaps. The quick cost/benefit calc was clear.

I learned a long time ago that when I give money directly to an individual, once I’ve made the decision, I need to trust it will be used in the best way they know how and to let go of any judgment. Might I have been “scammed” a few times over the years, definitely. Might a few folks have had a full belly that day, definitely.

This week many in the US are reminded to be thankful. Is it giving thanks or is it being thankful and giving? Giving and letting go of any judgment is love in action.

Love requires participation.

Love requires sharing.

Love requires action.

Love requires commitment.

I wish all who celebrate a very thankful Thanksgiving.

With gratitude,

Joyce Aiko

(Yes, love really is my middle name.)
