Week 1 - Self care
GEMS - Begin with gratitude

In a time when we often find ourselves divided instead of united,

Be reminded, there is only one force that overcomes fear and hate,

LOVE makes US great!

Whenever folks ask, “How are you?” it takes me a moment to answer. For years, like many folks, I would answer with “I’m well” or “Doing OK” or “Hanging in there.” I answered without really thinking about it.

Sometimes I was actually doing great, sometimes I wasn’t doing well at all.

Several years ago, when I was not in the best emotional state of mind, I started a daily Gratitude practice. I don’t recall who suggested it. I started writing down three things I’m grateful for every day. Sometimes I fall off the wagon and when I start back up, I always feel better.

For many years, Rev Mark Marcos implored his flock at CUMC to respond to “How are you?” with “I’m blessed! I’m blessed! I’m blessed!” At first, I thought this was a little too ‘out there.’

I came to realize this is great awareness and advice – I am blessed! I woke up this morning next to a partner I love and who loves me. I have a roof over my head and a full belly. I live in a beautiful part of the world. I have the means and privilege to go to sunrise yoga. I have a computer and the means to post a blog.

Whether you do it every day, once a week, or once in a while, counting your blessings results in a more blessed day. Even on the worst days, there is something to be grateful for.

Especially for those who think this is an ‘out there’ practice, try it. Please share how you express gratitude or share something you are grateful for today.

Love requires participation. Love requires sharing. Love requires action. Love requires commitment.

With gratitude,

Joyce Aiko
