Week 4 - Community
Show your Pride

In a time when we often find ourselves divided instead of united,

Be reminded, there is only one force that overcomes fear and hate,

LOVE makes US great!

Symbols matter. They message the values we stand for.

June is Pride Month. It is dedicated to the recognition of LGBTQ+ pride, joy, and inclusion. I love that we see rainbows everywhere. I break out my rainbow purse and forever favorite PG&E Pride ERG hoodie.

Someone recently asked me why it still matters to celebrate and demonstrate. After all, we have anti-discrimination protections and same-sex marriage, right? Sort of. Recent federal actions have shown that the application and interpretation of laws and protections can be upended with a change in leadership and the stroke of a pen. We can’t take for granted that equal rights will remain in place.

The fight continues. Symbols matter.

Wearing the rainbow is more than a personal statement of values. It demonstrates that you are a source of support, safety, and sanctuary. It sends a signal that you care and that you will stand by someone who needs your support, whether that means a smile or backing someone up in the face of a bully.

We demonstrate our commitment and celebrate our victories to remember the sacrifices of those who went before us to benefit ALL of us.

Showing your Pride is love in action. Please share what symbols you display that express your values.

Love requires participation. Love requires sharing. Love requires action. Love requires commitment.

For folks who share your experience, I'll send you a LOVEMUG sticker and magnet.

With gratitude,

Joyce Aiko
