Week 1 - Self care
My brain needs a diet

In a time when we often find ourselves divided instead of united,

Be reminded, there is only one force that overcomes fear and hate,

LOVE makes US great!

Many of us make resolutions to work on our health at the beginning of the year. Most often, this is about exercise and diet. This is absolutely part of bringing more love to ourselves by feeding our bodies with healthy food and movement.

It's easy for me to stock my refrigerator and pantry with healthy food items. Thankfully, I love fruit and veggies! The limited space in my kitchen keeps me from overstocking on potato chips, my favorite unhealthy binge.

My diet challenge is not food. Diet goes beyond what we eat and drink with our mouths and stomachs. The harder part of dieting for me is what I feed my mind, which in turn impacts my spirit. There has been a LOT of news over the past few weeks that is not healthy for me to consume in large quantities.

I fully admit to eating too much content filled with vitriol or disasters. Then, I would counter-binge on silly cat videos to help me regain my spirit. This is not a healthy content diet.

On Sunday, a dear friend sent me a link to a news story with a note that said, "WTF? Argggggghh!" I could not take anymore and decided to make it news fasting day. What a joy! Instead, I spent time with my loved ones, read my book club book, and watched a reflective movie. My brain ate healthy food, and my spirit felt so much better.

Now, I'm working on making this a habit. I'd love your suggestions. Does anyone use apps that limit your social media time? Have folders or separate email addresses for newsfeeds? Taken apps off your phone?

Please share how you keep a healthy diet of news and content.

Love requires participation. Love requires sharing. Love requires action. Love requires commitment. What you share is amplified and inspires others.

With gratitude,

Joyce Aiko

(yes, love really is my middle name)
