In a time when we often find ourselves divided instead of united,
Be reminded, there is only one force that overcomes fear and hate,
LOVE makes US great!
Earlier this week, a special friend reached out to see if I could get together. Funny how when you try to plan months in advance, things fall through, but often on short notice, the universe aligns to bring people together. Such a blessed and rejuvenating time!
I wanted to be part of the "cool" crowd when I was younger. Everyone did. I was part of the geek squad. Now the geeks are the cool kids – bad timing. I spent a lot of my time trying to fit it, trying to mold myself to what I thought I was "supposed" to be and believe. Like that one-size-fits-all pantyhose, that persona never fit.
It took me a lot of introspection and a significant bit of pain to figure out what was really important to me. As I learned more about myself, I realized how important it is to surround myself with friends with similar core values. People who support me and who love me for my soul. Part of bringing more love into my life is purposely spending meaningful time with the people who feed my soul.
Finding "my people" is about making deeper connections and building community. My people may be different than your people, and that's ok. The diversity of our communities is the core of LOVE makes US Great when we seek to understand, honor, and love each other inclusive of our differences. Sometimes, loving others even means setting and respecting healthy boundaries.
Today, I spent time conversing deeply with one of my people. We grumbled, we laughed, we cried. I'm grateful, and I'm re-energized.
Who are your people, and who have you been meaning to call? They may be available to go for coffee or a walk tomorrow. Don't wait.
Love requires participation. Love requires sharing. Love requires action. Love requires commitment.
With gratitude,
Joyce Aiko
(yes, love really is my middle name)
